Rú Lín Wài Shǐ is an excellent social satire novel of Wu Jing Zi. The work deeply describes in a true and clear way the real picture of the society of the Qing dynasty. In particular, the author exposes the corrupt academic system and the decadent personality of the confucian intelligentsia. Besides the deeply realistic value of the work, Wu Jing Zi also embodies progressive democratic ideas beyond the times. This is reflected in a number of idealistic characters, typically Shen Qiongzhi, a talented and complete woman who dares to stand up and fight for freedom, democracy and equality. Shen Qiongzhi clearly showed a sense of resistance against the male’s right regime and feudal power; a place where people hold, confine and hurt people, especially women. In this article, we use the method of systematization, the method of analysis and synthesis, etc. to clarify the sense of resistance of the character Shen Qiongzhi in the novel Rú Lín Wài Shǐ, and at the same time affirm its great values in the democratic thought of writer Wu Jing Zi embodied in ideal characters.
