EVALUATION ON THE POTENTIAL REMOVAL OF CATION AND ANION DYES USING CTS/PECTIN COMPOSITE

Abstract
This work aims to synthesize CTS/pectin composite and investigate the adsorption capacity on cation and anion dyes. The composite is generated at 30oC, during 1 hour and the mass ratio of chitosan and pectin (C:P) = 1:9 (w/w). FT-IR result revealed that all characteristic peaks of each material are found in composite and a zeta potential of composite is -18.30 mV. The evaluation of potential removal for cation dye (methylene blue, MB) using 1C:9P composite showed that the adsorption efficiency and capacity are 63.54% and 6.354 mg/g, respectively, at pH 10, within 75 min, and MB concentration of 20 mg/L. The change of weight ratio between CTS and pectin (3C:7P) helps an increase of MB removal possibility, particularly the adsorption efficiency and capacity reach 91.82% and 27.8 mg/g, respectively. The MB adsorption process of pectin and CTS/pectin is well-described using Langmuir isotherm model. Besides, the maximum efficiency and adsorption capacity of methyl orange are 75.03% and 84.01 mg/g with the ratio 9C:1P, respectively. This proves the cationic and anionic dye treatment potential of CTS/pectin composite, with pectin originating from natural source.
