Abstract
The issue of human freedom is one of the priority concerns of the field of social sciences and humanities, including literature. Awareness of freedom and the struggle for true human freedom have become the main goals of literature over time. In modern literature, the period of crisis of faith, people wonder even more about what true freedom is. This article employs an interdisciplinary approach, the method of synthesis analysis, and a poetics approach to explore the issue of human freedom in Haruki Murakami's novel Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. By analyzing the journey structure, the significance of the title, distinctive symbols and the seeking character, the article aims to affirm the meaning-making capability of the discourse on freedom in the work: freedom begins with a state of self-awareness, freedom is closely associated with loneliness, and the path to complete freedom is living authencially with one’s inherent identity.
