IMPACT OF NATURAL DISASTERS ON HOUSEHOLD LIVELIHOODS IN THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF VIETNAM

Abstract
The article focuses on studying the current situation of natural disasters and their impacts on household livelihoods in the mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. The methods used include: methods of collecting, analyzing and processing statistical data to analyze the natural disaster situation in the research area and methods of investigation and field survey to assess the impacts of natural disasters on 5 sources of capital of household livelihoods in the mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. The results of interviews with 240 households in 4 provinces of Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lao Cai, Lai Chau show that only social capital tends to increase, while the remaining natural, human, material and financial capital are all affected in a negative direction. This is the basis for research to propose solutions to develop adaptive livelihoods to natural disaster risks in the research area.
