Abstract

The paper presents the concept of practical problem-solving competence, the components and demonstrate of practical problem-solving competence in teaching some elements of mathematical analysis. The paper uses the method of secondary document research, practical survey and expert method. The research results have initially assessed the current situation of students’ practical problem-solving competence, in which students still have difficulty in identifying mathematical knowledge from practical situations, modeling practical situations, finding solutions to solve problems on established models, presenting solutions, evaluating and improving solutions. From the results of the analysis of the current situation, the authors propose a teaching procedure to develop practical problem-solving competence including five steps and proposes four pedagogical measures to develop the components of practical problem-solving competence for 12th grade students in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Furthermore, pedagogical measures also help students understand the connection between mathematical knowledge in school and practice, and apply mathematics to solve problems arising from real life.
