THE EFFECTS OF BEVEL ANGLE ON RESIDUAL STRESS AND DISTORSION OF TWO SS400 STEEL PLATES BY SYSWELD SOFTWARE

Abstract

Today, welding technology is widely used in all industries such as fabrication of steel structures, liquid tank, automobile technology, shipbuilding, etc. In which, Gas metal arc welding (MAG) process is used in many plants, companies that manufacture welding structures, especially shipbuilding. Residual stress and distortion in a weld results from the expansion and contraction of the weld metal and adjacent base metal during the heating and cooling cycle of the welding process. Doing all welding on one side of a part will cause much more distortion than if the welds are alternated from one side to the other. In this study, using the finite element method to analyze, predict and evaluate the degree of distortion and the residual stress distribution when welding the two SS400 steel plates 200×150×10 mm with different ways to prepare the bevel. It is noticed that the larger the beveled angle is, the greater the distortion is. The beveled angle of 50o, the distortion is 3,2 mm and residual stress is 589,76 MPa; deformation is 4,29 mm and residual stress is 572,99 MPa when beveled angle is 70o.
