LEVEL OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG FULL-TIME STUDENTS AT NAM DINH UNIVERSITY OF NURSING

Abstract

Emotional intelligence is considered as a predictor of success and a factor that brings happiness to people, therefore it is important in the development process of students, especially nursing students. The article deals with the level of emotional intelligence and explores some of the causes affecting the emotional intelligence development of full time nursing students at Nam Dinh University of Nursing. 420 full time nursing students at Nam Dinh University of Nursing were tested using Bar-On EQ test (1997). The results showed that: EQ level of the students are mostly at average level (78.1%), low level (4.3%), high level (17.6%). Students’ ability to perceive and express their emotions is better than their ability to understand and manage their emotions. According to the students, the most influential factors influencing the development of their emotional intelligence is family education and their own need and desire to improve emotional intelligence; the least influential one is occupations of their parents and the biological inheritance. This result served as a reference for students and the university to have an appropriate plan for strengthening students’ emotional intelligence.
