The problem of water pollution in mechanical craft villages is not only in Vietnam but also in most developing countries. In order to propose appropriate solutions in water resource management, the wastewater characteristics as well as the current state of surface water and groundwater quality in the mechanical craft village of Xuan Tien commune need to be evaluated overall. Investigations, interviews, field surveys combined with sampling and analysis of water characteristics are applied to obtain accurate assessment results. The results show that with very little production wastewater and discharged together with domestic wastewater, the wastewater of the craft village is not contaminated by metals, phenols, or grease, but the analyzed samples have color, TSS, the concentration of organic substances fluctuated quite large (Color 31.5 – 1,817 Pt-Co, COD 81.6 – 924.6 mg/l, BOD5 42.4 – 498.6 mg/l , TN 14.6 – 236.5 mg/l, TP 0.3 – 24.3 mg/l, Coliform 1,300 – 14,000 MPN/100ml), BOD5/COD ratio ranged from 0.43 to 0.54. The quality of surface water and groundwater is quite good. Therefore, domestic wastewater is an environmental issue that deserves the most attention in Xuan Tien mechanical craft village.
