Abstract
In this study, qualitative analysis of ethanolic crude extract from the roots of W. florida “Pink Poppet” was investigated. The results revealed that the presence of flavonoid, terpenoid, coumarin and saponin triterpene, but not for alkaloid, steroid and cardiac glycoside. The antioxidant activity was carried out due to the DPPH free radical scavenging resulting in EC50 value of 81.13 µg/mL. The biological activity of this crude extract was further evaluated on cytotoxicity against mouse colon cancer cells (CT26), mouse melanoma cells (B16) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2) by MTS assay. The results displayed the good cytotoxicities of ethanolic crude extract with IC50 values of 19.25; 9.16; 16.18 µg/mL, in comparison with 5-Fluorouracil as a positive control with IC50 values of 30.23, 16.70, 26.19 µg/mL, respectively. These results suggest a further investigation on isolation and evaluation on chemical compounds from the ethanolic crude extract from roots of W. florida “Pink Poppet”.
