STUDY ON CHARACTERISTICS OF ISOLATES OF STREPTOCOCCUS SUIS STRAINS CAUSING PNEUMONIA IN PIGS IN TAN YEN DISTRICT, BAC GIANG PROVINCE

Abstract

This study aims to determine some epidemiological and biochemical characteristics of S. suis strains in pigs with pneumonia in Tan Yen district, Bac Giang province. The prevalence of pneumonia in pigs in Tan Yen district, Bac Giang province was determined to be 30.8% and the mortality rate was 17.8%. Pneumonia morbidity and mortality rates vary by age group; Pigs younger than 3 months old had the highest morbidity and mortality rates, followed by 3-6 month old pigs and the lowest in pigs over 6 months old. In 130 patient samples, all bacteria, S. suis, were isolated; overall is 63.85%, in which, the highest in piglets after weaning at 1.5 - 3 months old accounts for 72.50% and the lowest in newborn piglets - 1.5 months old, accounting for 46.87%. The bacteria S. suis isolated in this study has the same biological characteristics as described in domestic and foreign literature on this bacterium. Among 83 isolates of S. suis bacteria identified serotype: none of them belonged to serotype 1; the number of strains belonging to serotype 2 accounted for the highest rate of 54.22% and the lowest rate of serotype 21 was 2.40%. Bacterial strains are highly susceptible to antibiotics such as ceftiofur, florfenicol, amoxicillin, ofloxacin and are resistant to some antibiotics such as neomycin, colistin, tetracycline.
