EFFECTS OF LIQUID HEIGHT AND SOIL DEFORMATION ON RESPONSES OF LIQUID STORAGE TANKS UNDER SEISMIC LOADING IN VIETNAM

Abstract

The non-linearities can appear at the soil-foundation interface and liquid height can cause detrimental effects on structures under seismic loadings. In this paper, the responses of liquid storage tanks under earthquake which occurred in Vietnam were obtained by lumped parameter method of soil-structure-interaction (SSI) model. The influences of considering soil deformation and liquid height (H) on the responses of liquid storage tanks are investigated, and the maximum values are compared with the API 650 results. By employing five numerical simulations of different liquid heights, the SSI models indicate that the shear forces and moments above the tank base plate (Q and M) are 30% to 60% lower and the sloshing displacements are 30% higher than the API 650. These results also show that, ???? and M are sensitive to the liquid height; in the case of two meter-height changes from H = 10 m, nearly a 30% reduction in H = 8 m and H = 6 m, a 100% increase in H = 12 m and H = 14 m.
