Conceptions of human nature in Confucian Philosophy
Abstract
According to Confucius, human nature is neither inherently good nor evil but
is shaped by social environment, education, and self-cultivation. Through an examination
of classical texts, this article analyzes and clarifies key issues, including: the concept of
human nature in Confucian philosophy; the role of education and self-cultivation in shaping
human nature; and the values as well as historical limitations of Confucian thought on
human nature when situated in the context of modern society. From this, the study draws
implications for education and the development of individuals in Vietnam.
