Abstract

Flood drainage capacity at river estuaries has strong impact to inudation process in the Mekong Delta, however, study about this issue is lacking. In particularly, recent years, although upstream flood tend to descrease while higher inundation was found in the middle region of the delta, this study focuses on flood drainage capacity and tide pumping in the Mekong Delta. Using main river topography of 1998, 2008, and 2018 and the flood data of 2018 in the Delta, we assess the flood drainage capacity as well as tide pumping by application of MIKE21FM for main channel and MIKE11 for cannal network. The results shows that total volume of tide water pump from ocean has been increased 21% at the river mouths but accumulating of 46% at Can Tho and My Thuan in period between 1998 to 2018. This finding could explains why upstream flood is rarely low while the higher inundation at Can Tho and My Thuan were happened in recently years and will be higher frequently in coming years.
