Greenhouse gas mitigation of technolo - gies that replace conventional asphalt bitumen

Abstract

This article assesses the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions when applying some alternative new technologies to conventional hot mix asphalt based on calculated results of total greenhouse gas emissions in different periods: production of input materials, production of concrete mix at plant, transportation and construction. The results show that cold recycling, warm recycling and hot recycling technologies allow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40,4%; 15,7% and 13,3% respectively compared to traditional hot mix asphalt technology. Therefore, applying recycled asphalt technology is an effective solution in building sustainable and environmentally friendly pavements.
