Abstract

This paper discusses the effect of nitriding on the microstructure and properties of 300Mn18Cr3 cast iron. The samples were quenched and tempered before nitriding. After heat treatment, the samples were analyzed by using optical microscope, EDX, Xray, hardness measurement, and abrasion and corrosion tests. The results indicate that the abrasion resistance of sample after nitriding increases significantly by comparing to the initial ones (abrasion values are 5μm and 0μm, respectively). Furthermore, the corrosion resistance also increases more than 4 times. It can be observed a nitrite layer on the surface after nitriding with 1114HV hardness.
