Abstract

After 10 years of implementing the Government’s Decision No. 32/QD-TTg on the project: Social Work Career Development in Vietnam 2010- 2020, social work in Vietnam has had fundamental changes in both quantity and quality. However, in many areas and scopes, social work has not clearly shown its professionalism, so the effectiveness is not high; The role of social worker is illdefined, not meeting the needs of target groups in society. This situation is caused by many reasons, including the shortage of social work experts, the limitation in training and the gaps in laws and policies on social work career. Based on the results of some recent studies, the author discussed the current situation of social work activities in the field of social welfare and health care at some social protection establishments and hospitals in Hanoi city. The author initially pointed out the gap between theory and practice of social work in the research sites, thereby giving some recommendations to improve the professionalism of social work activities, contributing to promote the development of social work career in Vietnam.
