Abstract

This study is situated within the rapidly evolving landscape of English education in Vietnam, where English has emerged as a language of diplomacy and international integration and a vital tool for personal growth. In this context, English-speaking self-efficacy, referring to individuals’ beliefs about their capacity to succeed in English-speaking tests, becomes paramount, particularly for university students majoring in English. By concentrating on public university students’ English-speaking self-efficacy, this research aims to offer insights into bolstering their confidence for enhanced performance in English speaking tests. Findings from the survey involving 121 second-year English majors at a public university in Vietnam indicate that students exhibit an average level of English-speaking self-efficacy, with a positive correlation observed between self-efficacy and speaking performance. By delving into the interplay between English-speaking self-efficacy and speaking proficiency, this study contributes to the formulation of more effective teaching strategies in English education, ultimately supporting Vietnamese students in honing their English abilities and self-efficacy.
