Comparing idioms containing the word "Hoa" in Vietnamese and the word "花" in Japanese

Abstract

Abstract: This paper presents a semantic comparison of idioms containing the word hoa in
Vietnamese and 花 in Japanese, pointing out certain similarities and differences in the use of idioms
with hoa and 花 by speakers of the two countries. The study provides readers with insights into both
shared and distinctive features in the language, culture, and cognitive perspectives of Vietnamese and
Japanese people: Vietnamese speakers tend to express a multi-colored worldview, closely tied to
emotions and social realities, whereas Japanese speakers show a tendency to focus on life philosophy
and personal qualities. Vietnamese idioms often employ a direct mode of expression, openly
revealing emotions, while Japanese idioms, in contrast, tend to convey meanings in a more subtle,
neutral manner, with emotions being less explicitly exposed.
