Abstract

The National Road No. 1, well-known in Vietnamese history under various names such as the mandarin road, the North-South road, the colonial road No. 1, and so forth, has a long history of establishment and development in Vietnam's transportation history. In the present-day administrative map of Vietnam, the National No. 1 is the longest road in Vietnam linking the northern customs gate of Huu Nghi quan (literally Friendly Gate) and the southern tip of Vietnam. This significant road witnessed many vicissitudes of Vietnamese history and confirmed the inevitable trends of socio-economic development of Vietnam in the integration process.

In this article, the author seeks to analyze the history of the North-South road in the period from the Chinese colonization of Vietnam until the present time.
