Since China officially became a close ally and an influential voice in Myanmar’s military government beginning in 1988, bilateral relations between the two countries have experienced notable
developments. In the sphere of political and diplomatic affairs, the Myanmar–China relationship has achieved several key milestones and has been regarded as a formal instrument for advancing bilateral ties. However, this period also witnessed strong competition from other countries seeking influence in Myanmar. This article explores the development of political and diplomatic relations between Myanmar and China from 1988 to 2021 and offers several assessments of the evolution of this bilateral relationship.
