Central Vietnam Institute of People's Representatives in the Struggle for Legal Reform in Central Vietnam During the First Term (1926-30)

Abstract

This paper clarifies the French colonialist purpose of establishing the Central Vietnam Institute of People's Representatives. According to its regulations, this organization was to provide the protectorate and southern Vietnam with economic, financial and social advices on central Vietnam. However, with the patriotism and compassion from its people, during the first term (1926-30), the Institute's operation extented beyond the French colonialist regulations. One of its striking activities was struggling for legal reform and constitutional formulation in central Vietnam. This added a new current of energy to the national movement in Vietnam in the early 20th century and drove the French colonialists embarrassed and fearful.
