60th Anniversary of the Civil Surveying and Mapping Industry - Opportunities and challenges in developing the spatial information

Abstract

This is a short article written by the Editor-in-Chief of this magazine on the technology development process of the world that makes a rapid development of surveying and mapping technologies. Since then, the article introduces 2 new opportunities including (i) the rapid development of surveying and mapping technologies based on the achievements of satellite technology and ICT, and (ii) the need of spatial information for development of information civilization. On the other hand, 2 challenges are also posed as (i) the difficulties in changing the human thinking of spatial enablement, and (ii) the pressure of private interests in market mechanism on making decisions on technological choice
