Abstract: Mathematical modeling capacity is one of the 5 core mathematical competencies that need to be formed and developed for high school students in Vietnam General Education Program (2018). This article proposes a research design to assess the mathematical modeling capacity of high school students. Survey results obtained from 374 participants showed the limitations and difficulties of students when participating in solving real-life situations using mathematical modeling competence.
