English and Vietnamese are two different languages, so they contain two different cultures. Therefore, when we learn another language, we learn about the culture expressed through that language. In this article, we will learn about personal pronouns in English and Vietnamese. The findings show that personal pronouns in English and those in Vietnamese both have person, number and gender, they are used in the subject and object position, but they have differences in quantity and cultural factors when we use them. In English there are only eight subject pronouns and eight object pronouns. In Vietnamese, there are many personal pronouns and the way of addressing them depends on age, social relationship, kinship relationship... to choose the appropriate personal pronoun đổi thành an appropriate personal pronoun. The findings will help English and Vietnamese learners avoid culture shock đổi thành culture shocks when using personal pronouns in the two languages.
