Abstract

This research was conducted to receive the feedback from English-majored
students towards their teachers’ use of mother tongue in EFL classrooms at Can Tho
University, a university in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. It was designed as a descriptive study
with the mixed method using questionnaire and interview as the research instruments to
collect data from the English-majored participants. The findings of the study revealed that
English majored students had a common tendency to approve the teacher’s use of Vietnamese
in the English classrooms, but they also claimed that Vietnamese should be used only at a
certain level depending on specific courses and majors. Students’ suggestions were proposed
to raise EFL teachers’ awareness of the extent of English and Vietnamese in their teaching to
help learners achieve the objectives of each particular course.
